Psalm 37:5-6
5. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.
6. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, And your justice as the noonday.
Greetings precious soul,
In this psalm of David, one of the wisdom psalms from the Old Testament, we are called to trust in God. Psalm 37 addresses the righteous, those who live by faith in the God of Israel, and offers comfort in the midst of injustice. It reminds us that the success of the wicked is fleeting, but that God’s justice endures.
The call in verse 5a is clear: “Commit your way to the Lord.” In Hebrew, the verb גּ֣וֹל (gō·wl) is used, which literally means: to roll or to commit. It evokes the image of a heavy burden that we roll off our shoulders and hand over to God. This goes beyond merely letting go; it is an act of surrender and trust, acknowledging that God is sovereign and that we can trust Him with our lives, our worries, and our future.
This stands in contrast to the autonomy so emphasized in our time: “Be the master of your own life.” But David teaches us that true freedom does not come through control, but through surrender. This requires humility. It reminds us of the fall into sin, where man wanted to determine for himself what is good and evil, resulting in a break with God. Since then, we have struggled with autonomy and distrust. But God calls us back to surrender.
Even as believers, we find it difficult to truly let go and trust. But David assures us: “He shall bring it to pass.” God promises that He will bring forth our righteousness as the morning light and make our justice shine as the noonday. This is not a vague hope but a promise rooted in God's faithfulness and omnipotence.
In verse 5b we hear the call: “Trust also in Him.” Faith means both knowledge and trust. Knowledge of who God is, of His holiness, and of the redemption through Jesus Christ. But also trust: the faith that what God has promised, He will do. Trust that Jesus came to save us from our sins and that He will one day return to bring justice.
The Bible is full of this call to trust in God and His Son. Jesus Himself says in Matthew 11:28-30:
28. Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.
This trust is not a work of our own strength or wisdom. It is God's Spirit who opens our hearts and draws us to Christ. In Him we find rest and assurance, even in the midst of injustice and uncertainty.
In verse 6, the promise reaches its full glory: “He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.” This image evokes the dawn, the dispelling of darkness, the certainty that after the night comes the light. The noonday represents the highest point of the day, when everything is visible and unmistakably clear.
This promise has a double meaning. On the one hand, it speaks of how God can make our righteousness visible in this life, in how He protects us, brings justice, and blesses us. But it also looks forward to the day of fulfillment, when Jesus Christ returns and God's justice is revealed forever.
The apostle Paul writes about this in Philippians 1:6:
‘Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.’
That day will come when the Kingdom of God is revealed in all its glory. Until then, the psalm calls us to commit our way to God daily, to trust in Him, and to rest in His promises: for the first time or again.
This also means that today there is still a time of grace. For those who do not yet know Him, the call from Isaiah 55:6-7 resounds:
6. Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.
7. Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the Lord, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.
God invites us. He calls us to repentance, to trust in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who died and rose for us. He is the morning light that dispels the darkness. He is the light that shines as the noonday, where everything is made visible, even our own hearts.
Let us today commit our way to the Lord, entrust our worries and plans to Him. Let us trust Him, not only with our words but also with our hearts. For He will do it. His righteousness will shine, and on the day Jesus returns, those who believe in Him will hear:
Matthew 25:34. ‘Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:’
Let us prepare for this: with trust, with hope, and with surrender to the Lord, our God.
Amen.
