Now that Easter is behind us and we are looking forward to Ascension Day, on which we commemorate that Christ ascended, we reflect on John 20. In John 20, we read in verse 1 that Mary Magdalene found an empty tomb without her Lord. She warns Peter and the beloved disciple. They see the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. The beloved disciple sees and believes, although they (Peter and John) do not yet understand that Jesus had to rise from the dead according to Scripture. Then they return home. Zij keerde zich om en zei tegen Hem: Rabboeni; dat betekent: Meester. Nu Pasen achter ons ligt en we uitkijken naar Hemelvaartsdag, waarop we herdenken dat Christus is opgevaren, staan we stil bij Johannes 20. In Johannes 20, lezen wij in vers 1 dat Maria Magdalena een leeg graf aantrof zonder haar Heere. Ze waarschuwt Petrus en de geliefde discipel. Die zien de doeken liggen, met de zweetdoek apart opgerold. De geliefde discipel ziet en gelooft, al begrijpen zij (Petrus en Johannes) nog niet dat Jezus volgens de Schrift moest opstaan uit de dood. Daarna keren zij terug naar huis. Johannes vertelt dat Maria Magdalena bij het graf achterblijft. Zij blijft staan, buiten het graf, en zij huilt. Right from the start, we are confronted with a deep spiritual truth. The psalm does not begin by telling us what the blessed man does, but what he refuses to do: he does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, does not stand in the way of sinners, and does not sit in the seat of scoffers. Meteen worden we geleid tot een diepe geestelijke waarheid. De Psalm start niet met wat de mens doet, maar juist met wat hij niet doet: hij wandelt niet in de raad van de goddelozen, staat niet op de weg van de zondaars, en zit niet op de zetel van de spotters.
